Friends of the Garden is all about YOU! It’s that simple. We are one, or we are not. You define us when you join us in FOG, when you volunteer, when you get personally involved, when you tell your friends, when you realize that the public gardens in Springfield belong to all of us.
As the gardens in Close Memorial and Nathanael Greene Parks grow, so do we grow..

We are volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the gardens in Close Memorial Park.
We are Honorary Lifetime Members:
Without support from people like you, these gardens, the Botanical Center, our group would not exist. You are the essential ingredient which makes it possible for future generations to enjoy the experience of these parks.

Although Friends of the Garden was formally recognized in 1998, development of the gardens at Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Parks dates back to 1975 when the federal government signed over surplus property to Springfield for park development.
Growth of the gardens began in stages, beginning with the Gray/Campbell Farmstead, which brought historic buildings to the park. The Mizumoto Japanese Stroll Gardens were created in 1985. Close Memorial Park was established in cooperation with the Springfield-Greene County Park Board in 1998, its purchase made possible through a donation from the C.M. Close family.
