Abstract: Travelers to far-away places are delighted to encounter flowers, butterflies, and birds that they have never seen before. This “biogeography” of life forms is a rich tapestry woven over millions of years. However, natural communities are threatened by highly mobile humankind moving animals and plants around the globe. We risk creating a world of weeds, in which aggressive expatriates disrupt natural ecosystems and erase native biodiversity. Dr. Barnhart will discuss the problem of invasive species, the animals and plants that are taking over where we leave off.
